Five Easy Ways to Support an Author

I’m an author and I was once an avid reader of romance books. I used to read everything. I’d stay up into the wee hours of the morning devouring stories. Lately, though, I’ve been leaning more into crime novels. As a romance writer, I try not to cross-populate genres too much in my head. 😅
But what I’m really here to talk about today is Reviews and Five Ways you can Support an Author, whether they’re traditionally published or indie.
Reviews Matter. A Lot.
One of the most impactful gifts you can give an author is a review. Authors love knowing you enjoyed (or didn’t enjoy) their book. Feedback helps us grow and keeps our work visible to new readers.
Here’s the thing your review doesn’t have to be a long, drawn-out sermon about pacing or character arcs (unless you want it to be). A simple, “I loved it!” or “This book made me smile” can go a long way. And if you're the type who enjoys breaking down every detail, we appreciate those reviews too!
Whether it’s a few sentences or several paragraphs, what matters most is posting the review on Amazon, Goodreads, or even social media. Every single review helps.
I get it posting a review can feel time-consuming, especially after you’ve just finished a book and moved on to the next thing. But honestly, it’s everything to an author. Your words exciting or critical can help another reader decide to take a chance on the book.
So the next time you finish a story, before you close your Kindle, iPad, or Nook, take a few seconds to leave a review. If it’s a paperback, log into your Amazon or Goodreads account and post one there. Your favorite (or newly discovered) author will be so grateful.
Confession Time…
I need to do better myself. There are at least two books I’ve read and haven’t reviewed yet. So yes, I get distracted too. But let’s make a pledge right now to support the authors we love.
Place your right hand on your book (or device) and repeat after me:
“I pledge allegiance to my book, for which it stands, that I will leave a review wherever I can.”

Now, here are the Five Ways to Support an Author (but if you’re a reader, you probably already know 😉):
Buy Their Book – Ebooks, paperbacks, audiobooks—all purchases help!
Leave a Review – Short or long, your opinion matters.
Share on Social Media – A post, a reel, a quote—tag the author!
Recommend to Others – Friends, book clubs, even librarians.
Join Their Newsletter – It’s the best way to stay connected and support ongoing work.
Let’s show our favorite authors some love. 💕
