Thanks to Sarah Boone, ironing clothes became more efficient and effective. An African-American inventor, Boone received U.S. Patent No. 473,563 on April 26, 1892, for her improvements to the ironing board. Her design, made of wood, was narrow, curved, and reversible, allowing for easier ironing of sleeves and fitted garments—an innovation that greatly improved garment care.

Boone is recognized as the second African-American woman to receive a U.S. patent, following Judy Reed. Alongside Miriam Benjamin, Ellen Eglin, and Sarah Goode, she was a trailblazer in home innovation, contributing to advancements that are still relevant today.
